Before welcoming the first adepts of sea bathing (1900) and later on the pioneers of european surfing (1960), GUETHARY was a fishermen's village, famous for hunting whales (XIII & XIV centuries). Situated in the middle of the basque coast, this cliff top village overlooking the ocean is an ideal starting point to discover the basque country (Biarritz, St Jean de Luz...). GUETHARY is also
famous for its typical architecture (basque & neo-basque style, art-deco...)
its culture (contemporary art exhibitions in the municipal museum,
craftsmen, traditions, gastronomy...) and its seaside (typical port, beaches
and waves for surfers). Many festive activities and events are proposed in summer like basque ball games, concerts... Do not hesitate to ask for advice at the Tourist Office which is open all year long.
